In this way HotA has a chance to become a successor of the legendary WoG that development cycle ended with version 3.58f released many years ago.Although for some people the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise died along with 3DO, there’s no denying that Ubisoft tried its best with the newer releases as well.
As authors themselves speak, this project will be developed for many years to come, and there are no plans to end its development on a specific date. The project is still developed and have had six major releases (in each there were many new features) and two official language versions - Russian and English. Currently, HotA is one of two fully completed fan-made Heroes of Might and Magic III add-ons, and the only one which managed to implement so serious undertakings as completely new town or terrain. What's interesting is that nobody pays those people for that - they do a solid work only out of their passion. Plot is deliberated by the series experts, the mapmakers have a big experience in their job and the coders do their best to erase all bugs which appear during direct interference with the game code. Instead of parts of various monsters put together, we have units which are created completely in 3D. Instead of graphics from other games or found on the Internet, we have completely new works made by artists themselves. In contrast to the vast majority of fan projects, in HotA Crew - the team developing the project - there are people who are experts within their field of work.
Instead of many innovations which change game to a larger degree and give fans loads of modding functions as scripts language, HotA relies mainly on further game development, that is introducing new units, artifacts or towns with minimal effect on game's mechanics. Unlike the above, Horn of the Abyss is trying to be a classic add-on, recalling original works of game creators, that is Armageddon's Blade and Shadow of Death. Therefore, it can bring to mind another unofficial fan-made add-on - In the Wake of Gods - or one of its many modifications, but the difference is in the project's nature. It's being created completely by fans of the game. Horn of the Abyss is an unofficial add-on to Heroes of Might and Magic III.
